Essays and Fiction in This Issue

Essays in the March 2009 issue include:

A continuing goal of Wordgathering is the discussion of theoretical issues and practical applications surrounding the development of disability literature. As mentioned on the home page, this issue focuses more fully on fiction than any of the previous issues. In addition to the fiction selections themselves, two essay focus on issues surrounding disabilities fiction. Steff Green hones in on the problem of creating characters in fiction who are blind or have limited vision that readers who are believable to blind readers themselves. Tracy Koretsky continues her look at books for young readers written about characters with developmental delays. In this second part of her essay, Koretsky sureys some of the leading candidates for the Dolly Gray Awards analyzing their success both in realistic portrayals of charaters and as funtctional pieces of fiction. Two essays continue to focus on poetry. Patricia Wellingham-Jones, the successful author of Don't Turn Away and End-Cycle discusses her writing process. Michael Northen continues with his survey of the field of disability poetry. Finally, the literary personal essay is represented by Sienna Elizabeth Raimonde.
