A Journal of Disability Poetry

Volume 5     Issue 4     December 2011

Essays in this Issue

The essays in this issue are a slight departure from our focus on poetry in that three of the four are short personal essays. Peter Street's essay, which is taken from his collection of memoirs, recounts his experiences as a child in school with multiple disabilities. Saundra Adams describes what happens the first time she tries to navigate an electric cart through the aisles of a department store. Poet and essayist Jimmy Burns returns with an account of his attempt to return to writing after a stroke. The fourth essay in the group, from travel writer Maya Northen has a totally different thrust. It is a primer for writers in the use of social media as an aide to their work.

Periodically, Wordgathering, features articles relating to disability and the visual arts, especially painting and photography. In this issue, Janet Lawson, the founder of Autistry Studios describes the work that is done there.

Wordgathering welcomes the submission of new short fiction as well as literature-related essays and non-fiction about disability or by writers with disabilities. Writers who wish to submit essays or short fiction to this journal should check the submission guidelines. Comments about the interviews or essays appearing in this issue should be submitted to comments@wordgathering.com.
