Sylvia Bowersox
AFTER THE WAR
After the war surviving Perdition
is tricky but can be done. Our ancient
grandmothers knew the score
& kissed us goodbye with blood
on their teeth.
Consider the day's dead, light another
cigarette, torture an exhausted veteran
with regret, dance with desperate
screaming angels, sing suicidal incantations.
In the battle of bullets & good intentions
soft bodies never complain.
God can always hate you tomorrow.
