Wordgathering

A Journal of Disability Poetry

Volume 1     Issue 2     June 2007

Welcome

Welcome back to Wordgathering, an online journal of disabilities-related poetry. In our initial issue in March 2007, we stated our purpose as trying to provide a venue for those whose talent in writing poetry converges with an interest in the growing field of disabilities literature.

Wordgathering received many positive comments on the quality of the poetry in its first issue. We hope to continue that quality with a new selection of poets, some of whom may also be new to readers. Included in this issue is poetry by Indira Allegra, Peter Austin, Glenda Barrett, Maria Brady-Smith, Maggie Jochild, Nikki Lee Manos, Ken Nye, David Scaffidi, Elaine Terranova, Onyinyechukwu Udegbe, and Megan Webster.

We have expanded our essay section this month to reflect our intent not only to publish disability poetry but to reflect upon the genre as well. We are happy to be able to present Jim Ferris', "Crip Poetry or How I Learned to Love the Limp." As one of the leading poets and formative voices in this new field, Ferris is able to provide a sense of the shape of disability poetry for those who those who may be new to it. We are also excited to be able to present an essay by Kathi Wolf, a poet who focuses on the legacy of Helen Keller as a jumping off point for her own poetry. In the final essay, "Caning in the City," gives Carmen Papalia's alternative to De Certeau view of

In this issue readers will also find a continuation of all of the features in our first issue: an interview with Petra Kuppers about her book Disability Culture Poetry, the first collection of essays written on disability poetry; a review of Patricia-Wellingham Jones latest book, End-Cycle and photography by Eli Northen. A new feature will be short excerpts of Tracy Koretsky's book Ropeless. An interview with Koretsky in the March issue can be seen by clicking on our "past Issues" link, another new feature of this issue.

We welcome your comments about Wordgathering and the work that you see here. From out last issue we received some helpful feedback and some that suprised us. Several readers, for example, described it as "inspirational" - not exactly an adjective we were shooting for! Wordgathering will be appearing as a quarterly publication. If you are interested in being notified when the next issue comes out or would like to send us your comments, please write to us at comments@wordgathering.com.
