WelcomeWelcome to the first issue of Wordgathering, an online journal of disabilities-related poetry. In launching this journal, we hope to provide an opportunity for those whose talent in writing poetry converges with an interest in the growing field of disabilities literature. For us this is a natural extension of the work we have been doing for the past nine years in small print publications. Does the world need another online journal for disability literature? We believe it does. While there are several outstanding venues for disability poetry including Breath & Shadow, Disability Studies Quarterly, and Audacity, there are not nearly enough for a literature whose voice has grown significantly in the past ten years. Like the other journals, Wordgathering has its own character - one that we hope will resonate with new readers. We will feature poetry by writers with disabilities on any subject and poetry related to disability by non-disabled writers. We invite all potential contributors to check out submission guidelines. This inaugural issue includes work by prize-winning American poets Millicent Borges Accardi, Barbara Crooker, Anna Evans, Michael Hathaway, Laura Hershey, Ellen LaFleche and Paul Kahn, as well as noted South African poets Kobus Moolman and Liesl Jobson. You will also find Daniel Simpson's essay on disability poetics "Line Breaks the Way I See Them," Heather Kirk's unique take on flower photography, a review of Sheila Black's recent is chapbook How to Be a Maquiladora, and an interview with novelist Tracy Koretsky discussing her book Ropeless. We welcome your comments about Wordgathering and the work that you see here. Wordgathering will be appearing as a quarterly publication.
