Book Reviews – Fall 2021

This issue of Wordgathering includes reviews of three new poetry collections: Ultimatum Orangutan by Khairani Barokka, Woman with a Fan: On María Blanchard by Diane Kendig, and once upon a twin by Raymond Luczak; and of the poetry chapbook, Request for Amendment by J. A. FieldsSusanne Paola Antonetta’s The Terrible Unlikelihood of Our Being Here and Ona Gritz’s Present Imperfect differently invigorate readers with the essay form. With thanks to the review author, Stephen Kuusisto, this issue includes a reprinted commentary on and review of M. Leona Godin’s riveting, unapologetic memoir, There Plant Eyes. Nuanced, inside- and outside-of-this-world tales are shared in Handicapsules: Short Stories of Speculative Crip Lit by Brian Koukol and Olivia Dreisinger‘s edited, double-anthology, Companions: An Anthology and Earthbound: An Anthology (subtitled New Writings on Disability, Animals, and Earth). We Move Together is a groundbreaking children’s book centering disability justice—for people of all ages—thanks to co-authors Kelly Fritsch and Anne McGuire, and talented illustrator, Eduardo Trejos.
